itinerary:

Day 1: Marrakech to Dades Valley – The Gateway to the Sahara

Departure from Marrakech

The journey begins early in the morning as we leave behind the bustling streets of Marrakech and head towards the majestic High Atlas Mountains. The drive through the Tizi n’Tichka Pass, which is the highest pass in North Africa, offers breathtaking views of the rugged mountain landscape, dotted with Berber villages that cling to the hillsides.

Visit to Ait Ben Haddou

Our first major stop is the ancient Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This iconic site has been the backdrop for numerous films, including Gladiator and Game of Thrones. Walking through the narrow, winding streets of this fortified village, we step back in time and marvel at the traditional mud-brick architecture.

Ouarzazate – The Hollywood of Morocco

Next, we continue to Ouarzazate, often referred to as the “Hollywood of Morocco” due to its prominent film studios. Here, we visit the Taourirt Kasbah, a well-preserved example of traditional Moroccan architecture. The kasbah offers a glimpse into the region’s history and the lifestyle of its former inhabitants.

Dades Valley – The Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs

As the day draws to a close, we arrive in the Dades Valley, known as the “Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs.” The valley is renowned for its dramatic landscapes, with steep cliffs and lush palm groves. We spend the night in a traditional riad, where we enjoy a delicious Moroccan dinner under the starry sky.

Day 2: Dades Valley to Merzouga – Into the Heart of the Sahara

Exploring Todra Gorge

After a hearty breakfast, we set out to explore the Todra Gorge, one of the most spectacular canyons in the world. The towering cliffs, some reaching up to 300 meters, create a narrow passage that has been carved out by the Todra River over millennia. This natural wonder is a favorite spot for rock climbers and photographers alike.

Journey to the Merzouga Desert

Leaving the gorge behind, we continue our journey towards the Merzouga Desert. As we approach the desert, the landscape gradually changes, with the lush greenery giving way to arid plains and, eventually, the vast dunes of Erg Chebbi. These towering dunes are among the highest in Morocco, reaching heights of up to 150 meters.

Camel Trekking into the Sahara

Upon arrival in Merzouga, we embark on a traditional camel trek into the heart of the Sahara. Riding atop these gentle creatures, we traverse the golden sands as the sun begins to set, casting a warm, orange glow over the dunes. The experience is both serene and awe-inspiring, as we journey deeper into the desert.

Overnight in a Berber Camp

As night falls, we arrive at a Berber camp, nestled among the dunes. Here, we are welcomed with traditional Moroccan hospitality, enjoying a dinner of tagine and mint tea under the vast, star-filled sky. The silence of the desert is profound, interrupted only by the occasional sound of a camel’s bell or the soft strumming of a Berber lute. We spend the night in a comfortable tent, surrounded by the tranquil beauty of the Sahara.

Day 3: Merzouga to Marrakech – The Return Journey

Sunrise Over the Dunes

The final day begins with an early wake-up call to witness the breathtaking sunrise over the dunes. As the first rays of light touch the sands, the desert comes alive with a warm, golden hue. This magical moment is one of the highlights of the trip, offering a sense of peace and connection with nature.

Return Camel Trek

After a light breakfast, we mount our camels once more for the trek back to Merzouga. The return journey offers a different perspective, as the morning light casts long shadows across the dunes. Upon reaching Merzouga, we bid farewell to our camels and begin the drive back to Marrakech.

Exploring the Route Back

The return journey takes us along a different route, offering the opportunity to explore more of Morocco’s stunning landscapes. We pass through the Draa Valley, the longest river valley in Morocco, known for its lush date palm groves and ancient kasbahs. Along the way, we stop at various points of interest, including traditional Berber villages and panoramic viewpoints.

Arrival in Marrakech

As the sun sets, we arrive back in Marrakech, where our unforgettable journey concludes. The vibrant city welcomes us with its lively atmosphere, bustling souks, and the iconic Jemaa el-Fnaa square. Though the journey has come to an end, the memories of the Sahara Desert and the warm hospitality of Morocco will stay with us forever.
