itinerary:
Day 1: Casablanca to Fes – From the Modern to the Ancient
Your journey begins in Casablanca, Morocco’s largest city and a key commercial hub. After a brief tour of the city, including a visit to the iconic Hassan II Mosque, you’ll set off towards the historic city of Fes. The drive will take you through the scenic countryside, passing through rolling hills and fertile plains.
Fes, one of the oldest and most important cities in Morocco, is a treasure trove of history and culture. Upon arrival, you’ll check into your riad, a traditional Moroccan house with an interior garden, where you can unwind and prepare for the exploration ahead.
Day 2: Discovering Fes – A Dive into Moroccan Heritage
The entire second day is dedicated to exploring Fes, a city often referred to as the cultural and spiritual heart of Morocco. Your guided tour will begin with a visit to the Fes el Bali (Old Fes), home to one of the world’s oldest universities, the University of Al Quaraouiyine.
The medina of Fes is a UNESCO World Heritage site, famous for its narrow, labyrinthine streets, vibrant souks, and historic madrasas. A visit to the Chouara Tannery offers a glimpse into the ancient craft of leatherworking, while the Bou Inania Madrasa showcases stunning examples of Islamic architecture.
You’ll also explore the Mellah (Jewish Quarter), the Royal Palace, and the Dar Batha Museum, each offering unique insights into the rich history and diverse culture of Fes.
Day 3: Fes to Merzouga – Journey to the Edge of the Sahara
On the third day, you’ll leave the city behind and journey south towards the Sahara Desert. This day’s drive is long but incredibly scenic, taking you through the Middle Atlas Mountains, past cedar forests and the alpine-style town of Ifrane. You’ll also pass through the lush Ziz Valley, known for its palm groves and ancient kasbahs.
As you approach Merzouga, the landscape transforms into the vast, arid expanses of the desert, with the towering sand dunes of Erg Chebbi dominating the horizon. In Merzouga, you’ll switch to camels for a trek into the desert, where you’ll spend the night in a traditional Berber camp. Here, you’ll enjoy a traditional dinner under the stars, accompanied by local music and stories.
Day 4: Merzouga to Ouarzazate – Through the Dades and Todra Gorges
After an early morning camel ride to witness the sunrise over the dunes, you’ll begin your journey towards Ouarzazate, known as the “Gateway to the Sahara” and a hub for Morocco’s film industry. On the way, you’ll pass through the breathtaking Todra Gorge, with its towering limestone cliffs and the picturesque Dades Valley.
The drive to Ouarzazate takes you along the Road of 1,000 Kasbahs, a route lined with ancient fortresses and traditional Berber villages. This region is renowned for its stunning desert landscapes and is often used as a backdrop for major films and television series. You’ll spend the night in Ouarzazate, where you can relax and enjoy the unique blend of cultures that define this fascinating city.
Day 5: Ouarzazate to Marrakech – Exploring Ait Ben Haddou and the High Atlas Mountains
On the fifth day, you’ll visit one of Morocco’s most famous landmarks, the Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou. This UNESCO World Heritage site is a stunning example of traditional Moroccan earthen architecture and has served as the backdrop for many films, including “Gladiator” and “Game of Thrones.”
After exploring Ait Ben Haddou, you’ll continue your journey through the High Atlas Mountains, following the winding roads of the Tizi n’Tichka Pass, one of the highest passes in North Africa. The landscapes here are nothing short of spectacular, with dramatic mountain peaks, lush valleys, and traditional Berber villages perched on the hillsides.
As you descend from the mountains, the vibrant city of Marrakech comes into view. Upon arrival, you’ll check into your riad and have the evening free to explore the famous Jemaa el-Fnaa square, where you can experience the lively atmosphere of Marrakech’s night markets.
Day 6: Discovering Marrakech – The Red City
The final day of your tour is dedicated to discovering the many wonders of Marrakech, also known as the Red City. Your guided tour will take you to the city’s most iconic sites, including the Koutoubia Mosque, the largest mosque in Marrakech, and the Saadian Tombs, a historic royal necropolis.
You’ll also visit the Bahia Palace, with its stunning gardens and intricate tilework, and the Majorelle Garden, a peaceful oasis of exotic plants and vibrant blue buildings, once owned by the famous French designer Yves Saint Laurent.
No visit to Marrakech is complete without exploring the medina, a UNESCO World Heritage site, where you can wander through the narrow streets, haggle in the souks, and experience the rich culture and history of this ancient city.
