itinerary: 4 Days Marrakech tour to fes
Day 1: Marrakech to Dades Valley – Traversing the High Atlas Mountains
Early Departure from Marrakech
Our journey tour begins with an early morning departure from Marrakech, heading towards the majestic High Atlas Mountains. The drive through the Tizi n’Tichka Pass offers breathtaking views of the rugged mountain landscape, with its winding roads and picturesque Berber villages. As we ascend, the air grows cooler, and the scenery becomes more dramatic, setting the stage for the adventure ahead.
Exploration of Ait Ben Haddou
Our first major stop is at the famous Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its stunning kasbahs and historic significance. This ancient fortified village has been the backdrop for numerous films and TV shows, and its well-preserved architecture provides a glimpse into Morocco’s past. We wander through its narrow alleys, marveling at the mud-brick buildings that have stood the test of time.
Visit to Ouarzazate – The Gateway to the Desert
Continuing our journey, we arrive in Ouarzazate, often referred to as the “Gateway to the Desert.” This city is home to the famous Atlas Studios and the impressive Taourirt Kasbah. We take some time to explore the kasbah, learning about its historical importance and the role it has played in Morocco’s cinematic history.
Arrival in Dades Valley
As the day draws to a close, we drive to the Dades Valley, also known as the “Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs.” This region is renowned for its dramatic rock formations and lush oases. We spend the night in a charming riad, enjoying a traditional Moroccan dinner and the peaceful ambiance of the valley.
Day 2: Dades Valley to Merzouga – Into the Heart of the Sahara
Todra Gorge – A Geological Wonder
After a hearty breakfast, we set off towards the breathtaking Todra Gorge. The gorge’s towering cliffs, which rise up to 300 meters, create a narrow canyon that is both awe-inspiring and humbling. As we walk through the gorge, the sheer scale of the rock walls around us is a testament to the power of nature.
Journey to Merzouga
Leaving Todra Gorge behind, we continue our journey towards Merzouga, the gateway to the Sahara Desert. The landscape gradually changes from mountainous terrain to vast, open plains, and eventually to the rolling dunes of the Sahara. The Erg Chebbi dunes, some of the highest in Morocco, loom ahead, signaling our arrival in Merzouga.
Camel Trekking into the Desert
In Merzouga, we prepare for one of the highlights of the trip: a camel trek into the Sahara. As the sun begins to set, we mount our camels and ride into the desert, the golden sands stretching out as far as the eye can see. The tranquility of the desert, coupled with the soft light of the setting sun, creates a moment of pure magic.
Overnight in a Berber Camp
Our day ends at a traditional Berber camp nestled among the dunes. Here, we are welcomed with warm hospitality and a delicious Moroccan dinner. The night is spent under the starry desert sky, with the sounds of Berber music filling the air. Sleeping in comfortable tents, we experience the timeless beauty of the Sahara in a way that few ever do.
Day 3: Merzouga to Midelt – The Journey Through the Ziz Valley
Sunrise Over the Sahara
An early rise is rewarded with the stunning sight of the sunrise over the dunes. The first light of day transforms the desert landscape into a sea of gold and pink, a sight that is both peaceful and awe-inspiring. After breakfast, we ride our camels back to Merzouga, where our vehicle awaits to continue the journey.
Exploring the Ziz Valley
Our route takes us through the beautiful Ziz Valley, known for its vast palm groves and dramatic gorges. This valley has been a key trading route for centuries, and its fertile landscapes provide a striking contrast to the arid desert. We make several stops to admire the views and take in the serene atmosphere of this lush oasis.
Arrival in Midelt
We continue northward to Midelt, a town nestled between the Middle and High Atlas Mountains. Known for its apple orchards, Midelt offers a refreshing break from the desert heat. We spend the night in a cozy guesthouse, enjoying a delicious meal and the cool mountain air.
Day 4: Midelt to Fes – A Cultural Journey
Crossing the Middle Atlas Mountains
After breakfast, we set off on the final leg of our journey, crossing the Middle Atlas Mountains. The landscape changes once again as we drive through cedar forests, passing by Berber villages and grazing sheep. This region is known for its natural beauty, and the drive is a scenic one, offering plenty of opportunities to stop and take in the views.
Arrival in Fes
As we descend from the mountains, we approach the ancient city of Fes. Known as Morocco’s cultural and spiritual heart, Fes is famous for its well-preserved medina, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the ancient University of Al Quaraouiyine. Our journey concludes as we enter the bustling streets of Fes, where the old world and the new coexist in harmony.
